The New Jersey Department of Environmental Management (DEOM) is planning a “New Jersey Heartburn Relief” project in the state to reduce heartburn.
“We want to get rid of that annoying heartburn,” said DEOM chief executive Dr. Thomas J. Kowal, director of DEOM’s Heartburn Relief Division. “We are really excited about this idea.”
The proposed project, titled “Heartburn Relief,” involves a program of seven 14-tablet heartburn relief products, including three new heartburn-lowering products and a new combination heartburn and acid reducer. The products are based on the prescription drugs Nexium (esomeprazole) and Prilosec (omeprazole), which have been available in the U. S. since 2001.
Dr. Kowal said he will work with the agency to get the proposed program through the agency’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, an organization that tracks disease-causing factors and provides care to patients suffering from heartburn.
“We are really excited about the fact that these products are helping people with heartburn feel better,” he said.
The proposed program was funded by an agency grant that was awarded to an additional company in 2004. The company is also looking at selling heartburn medications, including Prilosec, in the U. under the brand name Prilosec XR.
Kowal said he hopes the proposed heartburn relief program will help patients get relief from their chronic heartburn.
“I don’t want to be the only person who has to deal with this,” he said. “I am going to work with the DEOM to find some innovative approaches that people can take to help their heartburn.”
DEOM is working with the FDA to help the agency create a prescription drug warning label for the heartburn products. The FDA has identified the heartburn medicines as being linked to serious heartburn, a condition that can cause pain, discomfort and heartburn symptoms, including heartburn, acid reflux and pain during urination.
The FDA is also looking at creating a new heartburn warning for Nexium and Prilosec, which are prescription heartburn medicines. The FDA is also looking into testing the effects of Prilosec and omeprazole on people with the condition.
Kowal said the FDA has several key recommendations, including:
“The new heartburn relief products are really important because they can help people get rid of their heartburn,” said Dr. Kowal.
“It’s really important to have a heartburn medication on hand in the most affordable and safe way possible for the patient,” he said.
“We are really excited about this pilot program,” Dr. Kowal said. “It is important to make sure that there is a safety net to help people get rid of their heartburn.”
Kowal, of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, said the plan is for a total of $20 million to $25 million in savings for the project.“The plan will help people get rid of their heartburn in a safe and effective way,” he said.
The project is being financed by an agency grant awarded to one of the largest companies in the United States to help make a more affordable medicine available to the public. The grant is awarded at a time of the latest federal legislation.
